26.11.2013. De eerste keer dat ik Chloe Charles hoorde zingen was tijdens het “So what’s next” festival in Eindhoven. En ik was niet de enige die onder de indruk was, want ze werd overal de ontdekking van het festival genoemd. Ik was daarom verheugd dat ik haar weer kon horen zingen in Peoples Place in Amsterdam.
Ze begon het concert met het nummer “Find her way” van haar nieuwste cd “Break the balance”. Een nummer dat heel persoonlijk zou kunnen zijn, aangezien het gaat over iemand die aan het begin van haar carrière staat en niet alleen in de toekomst moet kijken, maar ook moet blijven genieten in het heden. Naarmate het concert vorderde werd het steeds beter.
Chloe laat een stem horen die zo getraind is dat ze werkelijk alles aan kan. Haar stem heeft een enorm bereik en ze raakt het publiek aan. Niemand praat en niemand gaat zelfs tussendoor naar het toilet. Mensen willen niks missen. En Chloe zet de zaal in vuur en vlam. Als ze de gitaar weg heeft gelegd, geeft ze alles. Zoals in mijn persoonlijke favoriet “Refrain from fire”, een nummer over liefde en wat het kan veroorzaken. Het nummer gaat langs je rug omlaag en geeft je de rillingen. Haar teksten zetten je aan het denken. Zoals “God is a toad”. En altijd weer met die prima begeleidingsband, vanavond twee violisten en een pianist. Het was een magische avond en ik weet zeker dat we nog veel meer van deze bijzondere vrouw gaan horen.

26.11.2013. The first time I heard Chloe Charles sing was at the “So What’s Next” festival in Eindhoven. I was not the only one noticing her great skills. She was the discovery of the festival. I was more than thrilled to have the chance to hear her sing again in Peoples Place in Amsterdam.
She started with “Find her way” of her last cd “Break the balance”. A song that could be very personal, since it’s all about someone at the start of a career confronted with the distractions life offers and all the doubts you have before starting, with the message of staying in the present once in a while. As the concert continues it get’s better and better.
Chloe shows a voice so skilled that she can take it all. Her voice has a enormous reach, and she touches the audience. No talking, not even going to the toilet. People did want to miss a thing. And Chloe sets fire to the room. When she sings without the guitar she puts all energy in her singing. Like my personal favourite “Refrain from fire”, a song about love and what it can cause. The song goes down your spine and hits you. Her lyrics make you think, like one of the last songs “God is a toad”. And always with the great support of her band with piano, and violins. What a magic night it was. I am pretty sure we will hear much more of this amazing woman.
